Abstract Ecological restoration through conventional plantation techniques can create forests with low biodiversity. As such, one way to overcome possible shortcomings of the restoration process is to use nucleation techniques, such as artificial perches. These structures attract the avifauna and increase the deposition of seeds associated with feces or bird regurgitation. Seed rain and seedlings regeneration were monitored under artificial perches and control areas in a degraded area of Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil. In this study, 46 morphospecies of seeds were identified. Under the perches, greater abundance and richness of seeds were found with certain ecological and functional traits that support the role of artificial perches as a biological diversity core. Seedling establishment was low under the perches and control areas. This suggests that integrated actions to improve soil conditions should be applied to enhance seedling establishment.

ABSTRACT In this article the ways of installation and operation of energy transmission lines are pondered in relation to the ecological consequences of its utilization in forest areas. Physical and biological alterations are treated by the discussion of ecological aspects as fragmentation of forested areas and the effects of altered areas in contact with the forest (board effects).

RESUMO São ponderadas as formas de instalação e operação de linhas de transmissão de energia elétrica em relação às resultantes ecológicas advindas da sua utilização em áreas florestadas. Alterações físicas e biológicas são abordadas a partir da discussão de aspectos ecológicos como a fragmentação das áreas florestadas e os efeitos provenientes do contato das áreas alteradas com a floresta (efeitos de borda).

ABSTRACT The fragmentation of Atlantic Forest, as a result of landscape transformation, became even harder the conservation of that rich biodiversity. Although this, theoretical recent concepts, if consistently supported with land experimentation, could minimise the problems of isolation. The increases of connectivity throw ecological corridors, between conservation units and even between the well preseverd fragments can, in part, the good conditions and even promote the functional recuperation of ecological units.

RESUMO A fragmentação na Mata Atlântica, resultado da transformação da paisagem, torna cada vez mais difícil a conservação da rica biodiversidade desta bioma. Porém novos conceitos teóricos, se consistentemente embasados através de experimentação de campo, podem minimizar os problemas decorrentes do isolamento. O aumento da conectividade através de corredores ecológicos entre unidades de conservação e até mesmo entre os fragmentos mais bem conservados pode, em parte, permitir a manutenção destes a longo prazo e mesmo promover a recuperação funcional de determinadas unidades ecológicas atualmente ilhadas.

ABSTRACT This work provides a map (restricted to Atlantic forest fragments, mangroves and coastal shrubs and legally protected areas) and a list with a brief description of 81 Special Areas (SA’s) of Santa Catarina State composed by 71 Conservation Units (CU's) and 10 Indigenous Areas. Propose the wide of protected land, describing briefly some possible areas to compose the set of SA’s of the State.

RESUMO Este trabalho apresenta um mapa (restrito a remanescentes da Mata Atlântica, mangue, restingas e áreas legalmente protegidas) e uma atualização da listagem com uma breve descrição de 81 Áreas Especiais (AE’s) no Estado de Santa Catarina. Esta listagem foi composta por 71 Unidades de Conservação (UC’s) e 10 Áreas Indígenas. Propõe-se ainda a ampliação do território protegido através da breve descrição de algumas áreas passíveis de compor o conjunto das AE's do Estado.

ABSTRACT Some recent concepts of landscape ecology (structure and function of landscape treated on systemic form) are discussed considering the fragmentation of natural space by the modern society. The increase of effectiveness of Conservation Units (CU's) is based upon ecological-space principles in which closer, bigger and more circular shaped areas are more adequate. The increase of connectivity between CU's is considered fundamental and it is proposed by the linkage corridors, based on legal restrictions; besides the decrease of external interferences, by the buffer and restricted zones. In a preliminary way, the CU's into tropical forests ecosystems must have an area higher than 100 ha; a buffer zone having, at least, a 100 m width around it; a restricted use zone having 10 Km radius; as well as linkage corridors to others CU's wider than 200 m.

RESUMO Alguns conceitos atuais da Ecologia da Paisagem (estrutura e funcionamento da paisagem abordada de forma sistêmica) são discutidos considerando-se a fragmentação do espaço natural pela sociedade moderna. A ampliação da efetividade das Unidades de Conservação (UC's) baseia-se em princípios ecológico-espaciais nos quais áreas mais próximas, maiores e mais arredondadas são as mais adequadas. Considera-se fundamental o aumento da conectividade entre UC’s, através da proposição de corredores de ligação, baseados nas restrições legais, além da diminuição das interferências externas, por meio das zonas de abafamento e de uso restrito. De forma preliminar, UCs em ecossistemas florestais tropicais devem apresentar uma superfície preferencialmente superior a 100 ha; uma zona de abafamentode, pelo menos, 100 m em seu entorno; uma zona de uso restrito de 10 Km de raio; além de corredores de ligação à outras UC’s, com larguras superiores a 200 m.
